Nov. 6: Police Fair
The SFU Surrey campus will host a Police Fair on Nov. 6, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Mezzanine, involving vendors and recruiters from policing, corrections, security and more. Members of the Edmonton police will be at SFU Surrey later in the week for an information session and to conduct testing for future hiring. Info session: Nov. 8 from 7-9 p.m., room 5280. Nov. 6: Take your Kids to Work Day
SFU participates in this national initiative, which enables Grade 9 students to job-shadow a parent for one day, on Wednesday, Nov. 6. To take part, obtain permission from your supervisor in advance and RSVP to the campus coordinator. At SFU Surrey, contact Rachel Nelson at rer1@sfu.ca
Nov. 6 and 20: Mentor Meet/Venture Connection
Drop by for a casual chat about your business ideas with an experienced entrepreneur and learn how Venture Connection programs can help your new venture succeed. Meet up in the Mezzanine by Blenz from 12 noon until 1 p.m.
Nov. 6: Diploma in Applied Project Management
Learn about SFU’s Diploma in Applied Project Management, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., room 3170, presented by Management and Professional Programs, Continuing Studies. For more details see www.sfu.ca/pm.
Nov. 7: United Way Smackdown Faculty Debate (webcast at SFU Surrey)
Students nominate their favourite professors who are known for their sense of humour, ability to talk about anything and possess an appreciation for volunteerism and giving. Webcast at SFU Surrey will be in room 3595.
All proceeds from this event, to be held at the SFU Theatre, Burnaby campus, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. go to the United Way to raise funds for programs and research that help prevent poverty, bullying and isolation among seniors in our local communities. Nov. 7: (Thursdays): Beedie drop-in
Connect with Beedie School of Business students, instructors and staff in a brand new way, outside of the classroom/office setting, on Thursdays from 12:30-2:30p.m. Drop in to Rm SUR 3330, let off some steam, join a round of ping-pong, board games and great conversations. Nov. 7: SFU Surrey President’s Gala
Annual gala held at the SFU Surrey campus starting at 6 p.m. See www.sfu.ca/ceremonies/events/2013/public-events/surreygala.html. Proceeds from this event go to the SFU Surrey Close to Home Awards Endowment Fund, which supports students south of the Fraser River.
Nov 12: Ignition Workshop series #3 (of 10)
Learn about corporate structure and IP strategy for start-ups, at the third in a series of Ignition workshops hosted by Venture Connection and Venture Labs, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the SFU’s Harbour Centre campus, room 7000.

Until Nov. 16: Surrey, A Place of Refuge exhibit
Visit a unique exhibition at City Centre Library that highlights Surrey as a leader in B.C., welcoming immigrants and offering a place of refuge to people in need. The exhibit shares stories of residents who journeyed to a new life in Surrey. Supported by the Surrey Welcoming Communities Project and the SFU Surrey-TD Community Engagement Centre.
Nov. 20: Café Scientifique – Super Seniors
Angela Brooks-Wilson, associate professor of biomedical physiology and kinesiology, and a distinguished scientist at the B.C. Cancer Agency, shares some insights from her Healthy Aging study. The research focuses on more than 500 “super seniors” between the ages of 85 – 105, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes or Alzheimer’s disease, and examines the genetic features that correlate with long-term good health in these exceptional individuals. www.sfu.ca/science/outreach-program/café_scientifique.html

Nov. 25: Learn, Taste, Be Inspired
Through cooking and sharing food from around the world explore your role in making Surrey a welcoming and inclusive community. The next session of food and dialogue is Monday, Nov. 25 at Guildford Park Secondary School from 6-9 p.m., featuring China. Hosted by DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society and supported by the SFU Surrey – TD Community Engagement Centre.
Semester-long: Celebrating SFU’s published works
SFU Surrey’s Fraser Library’s electronic display celebrates published works by SFU Surrey faculty members and promotes student research. Knowledge Creation @ SFU Surrey will feature a series of slides that include an author photo and citation for a recent publication. Citations for consideration can be sent to hah1@sfu.ca
New award celebrates sustainability @SFU
SFU has established an award celebrating those from the SFU community who demonstrate outstanding leadership in advancing sustainability within or beyond the university.
