COBS Bread in South Point Annex Mall collected close to $300 for Semiahmoo House Society at a fundraiser earlier this month.
The July 2 sidewalk party featured food, face painting and free samples.
The franchise has held similar events in the past for Semiahmoo House – which supports individuals and families challenged with a developmental disability – and has hired an employee through the non-profit society’s Customized Employment program.
Alexa Lehwald has only been working at the bakery since March, but has already had a big impact on the business, according to owner Kiran Behl.
“One of my girls was teary-eyed telling me how much she enjoyed teaching Lex how to make scones for the first time,” Behl – who celebrated five years as a franchisee at the fundraiser – said in a prepared statement. “She said it was one of the best work experiences of her life.”
