A local brewpub is pitting a cask of its beer against one from a Surrey brewery in a friendly competition happening next Thursday night.
This is the second cask night held at the Mission Springs Brewing Company, and the local business is aiming to make it a monthly event.
Big Ridge Brewing Company is bringing a cask of India Pale Ale (IPA) for customers to sample, perched right next to Springs’ brewmaster Tim Brown’s IPA.
Casks are 40-litre stainless steel barrels, explained Springs’ general manager Niki Reibin, containing one-off beer creations.
“Once it’s gone, it’s gone,” she said.
Brown said he’s building a “standard” IPA for the July 14 event, which gets underway with a tapping of the cask at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Interest in craft beer — generally defined as beer created by small-scale breweries — has been surging in the Fraser Valley and the rest of North America for the past two years.
Brown said his Bombshell Blonde Ale used to be the most popular, but customers are now more often ordering his Old Sailor IPA.
