The B.C. Water & Waste Association (BCWWA) presented the Okanagan Water Supply and Demand Project Partnership with the Excellence in the Water and Waste Community Award at its annual conference in Penticton.
The award recognizes a group for advancing excellence in the water and waste community by demonstrating innovation and creativity in resolving water or waste issues in a community.
Formed in 2006, the Okanagan partnership created the most detailed assessment ever conducted of water supply and demand in Western Canada. Brian Guy, vice-president and general manager of Vernon’s Summit Environmental Consultants, acted as the project manager and provided technical leadership to the partnership’s working group.
“It is an honour to be recognized as part of the project leadership team for our work in helping the Okanagan meet its water challenges,” said Guy. “The partnership’s impact in providing future direction for water policy and regulations through a clear vision will provide long-lasting benefits to the region.”
The project’s data and models are being used in regional growth strategies, liquid waste management plans, water master plans and other complex studies and critical research. It has also led to the development of innovative applications, such as an online database and web tools, and contributed scientific insights towards a valley-wide public communication program on water conservation.
