Tolko embraces awards

Local forestry company recognized by chamber of commerce

A large North Okanagan corporation is welcoming recent recognition.

Tolko Industries received the business of the year and exporter of the year awards at the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce’s business excellence awards gala.

“It is especially meaningful to receive this from residents and fellow businesses in our home community,” said Brad Thorlakson, Tolko president.

In addition to Tolko’s head office in downtown Vernon, the company has operations in Lumby, Lavington and Spallumcheen.

The company has more than 920 employees in the North Okanagan.

“This recognition reflects the efforts and values of a very committed team throughout Tolko,” said Thorlakson.

To help offset the dramatic drop in U.S. market demand, Tolko has substantially grown its overseas markets and is now a leading supplier of lumber in major markets such as China and Korea.

“It is great to be doing so much of this just a few miles from where we started,” said Thorlakson, in reference to the Lavington site where Tolko began in 1956.
