Brian Johnson is no longer the general manager of Ucluelet’s Black Rock Resort.
David Ehrhardt, one of the resort’s owners, told the Westerly News on Thursday that Johnson’s contract had not expired but a decision was made by the resort’s board of directors to move in a different direction.
“We were concerned that the spirit and the culture at Black Rock needed to continue growing and we felt that we needed to make a change to allow that to take place,” Ehrhardt said.
He said the position would be filled “as quickly as we’re able to but the key is to find the right person.”
In the meantime, a local staffer is filling the general manager position and Ehrhardt assured the resort will continue moving forward.
“We’ve grown over the past eight years and, I think, every year that’s gone by we’ve done a few more things right and hopefully we’ve learned from mistakes in the past and become a better place to be,” he said.
“The culture of Black Rock, we think, is really important and it really needs to be linked to the West Coast lifestyle. So, we’re going to be continuing to do all of the things that we did previously and hopefully do them better.”
Johnson’s first day as the resort’s general manager was Dec. 7, 2015. He had spent the seven years prior with Sandman Hotels in Victoria.
“We wish him every success in his future endeavours,” read a statement emailed to the Westerly News by a Black Rock spokesperson on Thursday.
“Black Rock prides itself on developing a culture which truly represents the unique beauty and strengths of the West Coast. As we continue to build upon the culture that has been developed over the past 8 years we have appointed an interim manager while our search is underway to fill the general managers position on a permanent basis.”
The Westerly attempted to contact Johnson on Thursday but did not immediately hear back.
