The third session in the Mission Community Leadership series on March 31 will feature Tamara Vrooman, chief executive officer of Vancity Credit Union.
“A Conversation with Tamara” at 9:30 a.m. will lead off the session on ethical decision making. As leader of the Canada’s largest credit union, Vrooman harnesses the strength, breadth and diversity across Vancity to encourage growth and prosperity for the greater good. Following her earlier career in public service she works to ensure Vancity extends its financial success to facilitate positive social and environmental change.
A “leader taps into the fullest capacity in a group of people, paints a picture of what’s possible and supports the team in making it come to life,” she said.
Under Vrooman’s leadership, Vancity has become the first carbon neutral credit union in North America, the first Canadian financial institution invited to join GABV, the largest organization in Canada with a living wage policy, and in 2011 achieved the best earnings performance in its 65-year history.
After the keynote address with Vrooman, lead by UFV’s president Mark Evered, participants will break into workshops to learn how to be ethically fit — a session developed by the Institute of Global Ethics — and explore how to use Rotary’s Four Way Test to guide decisions.
The day runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the ballroom of the Mission Best Western.
As part of the Vancity’s sponsorship of the lecture series, members are invited to attend Vrooman’s keynote address for free. Individuals wishing to register for the full day should visit www.missionchamber.bc.ca to register, or come early to sign up at the Best Western. The cost for the full day session is $20.
The Building Community Leadership series is about learning new skills and building community leadership capacity. Participants who attend all events will be acknowledged by the District of Mission as potential community leaders and will have the option to be placed on a community leader’s register.
Next month’s session on April 28 is the last in the series. The topic is managing change with renowned keynote speaker Joe Roberts, the Skidrow CEO, and workshop facilitator Cathryn LeCorre.
