Recycle your old lights at bottle depots

As the tinsel and trees come down, residents are reminded to recycle any broken Christmas lights.

“We all know that annoying feeling when you plug in the string of lights and the bulbs are no longer working,” said Jeannine Bartz, Product Care Recycling. “Many people don’t know what to do with that pesky string once it’s reached the end of its useful life. Thankfully, they can be recycled.”

Christmas string lights can be recycled across B.C. including in Vernon at Chasers Bottle Depot (4702 – 31 St.) or Interior Freight and Bottle Depot (4205-24th Ave.).

“Drop off is free, making it really easy to do the right thing with those broken and burnt out lights,” said Bartz.

In addition to Christmas string lights, the program accepts all kinds of lighting products for recycling ranging from fixtures (think chandeliers, desk lamps, etc.) to burnt out light bulbs including fluorescent tubes, halogen bulbs, CFLs, LEDs, and more. Check out the full list of accepted products at lightrecycle.ca.

“When it comes to recycling Christmas lights, many of the components such as metal and plastic can be recycled and repurposed for other uses,” said Bartz.
