Over 40 employers looking to hire at 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre

If you’re looking to change up your career or break into a new industry, stop by the Black Press Extreme Education and Career Fair where over 40 employers are looking to hire some great people.

The career fair is on from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre.

From retail to healthcare to the armed forces, many different industries are represented at the fair and looking for new employees with a variety of skills.

For those who love the outdoors and being out on the water, Mowi Canada West has positions open for people with training in the fishing industry but also for people with no experience.

“We’re looking for mariners with 60-ton tickets or 150-ton tickets, fishing master 4, all the way up to people right out of high school for seaside technicians to hatchery technicians,” he said.

Mowi Canada West is based out of Campbell River, but operates up the northwest coast of Vancouver Island.

This is the first year First Choice Haircutters has been involved in the career fair and they are looking forward to hiring new hair stylists at locations across the Island.

Shannon Taylor, district manager for First Choice Haircutters on Vancouver Island, said they are looking for qualified hair stylists to start apprenticeships with the company.

“We are looking for great personalities and ready to work and make some great money with First Choice Haircutters,” she said, adding that those who didn’t have a chance to make it to the career fair can pop into any one of their 14 locations across the Island and talk to a team manager about opportunities.

Members of the Canadian Forces also had booths set up with lots of different positions open for people with or without military experience. From human resources to food services to financial services, 19 Wing Comox probably has a position for everyone. But there are also some new, exciting jobs the air force is recruiting for.

“Primarily right now we’re looking for air ops support which is a brand new initiative working with search and rescue technicians,” said Master Warrant Officer William Oliver.

Many who work part-time with 19 Wing have previous military experience, but it’s also a great way for people to see if they’re interested in pursuing a career with the military.

“We train them to the same standard as the regular force,” said Oliver. “So it’s almost like going into a swimming pool. They’re trying the shallow end of the pool first before they’re thinking of the deep end of the pool. If they do like the lifestyle and the skill sets that they’ve acquired, they may decide to join in the regular force after a period of time.”

Those who apply today for a job with the air force will be contacted afterward to discuss their interests and to see where they would be a good fit.

Those visiting the career fair are encouraged to bring their resume and be prepared for an on-spot interview. But if you missed the fair, no worries. Visit Black Press Extreme Education & Career Fair Facebook page for a full list of employers to contact them directly.
