Mak Yu, owner and chef at Golden Sushi, offers a variety of Korean and Japanese food and serves it with a smile.

Yu has been in the business of sushi for more than 30 years and worked in big cities across the country. He moved to Golden, B.C., three years ago and opened his sushi restaurant 1.5 years ago. He says he enjoys the friendly nature of the people in Golden.

“It’s a different style here. It is very relaxed here,” he says. “People like it here.”

Located at 828 10th Ave. South, Yu offers many popular items at Golden Sushi. Some of the local favourites include sushi rolls such as the dynamite roll and salmon avocado roll.

The dynamite roll includes five pieces of sushi rolled with deep fried prawns, crab meat, avocado, and cucumber rolled in rice and wrapped in seaweed. The salmon roll includes eight pieces of salmon and avocado rolled in rice and wrapped in seaweed.

As for the Korean cuisine he offers at Golden Sushi, Yu says his popular items include bibimbap, a spicy meal served with veggies and marinated beef on rice with hot chili sauce, and bulgogi, a savoury meal with beef and veggies on rice.

Many udon soups are offered at Golden Sushi, which are quite popular. It is a hearty meal of noodles, veggies, or meat, served in a soup. The tempura udon soup comes with noodles, veggies and two pieces of prawn tempura. The seafood udon soup comes with noodles, a variety of seafood, veggies, and green onion.

Golden Sushi also has a retail section in the foyer of the restaurant that hosts a selection of Korean and Japanese groceries including ginseng tea, chop sticks, and seaweed snacks. Yu says his stock runs out quickly.

Like many other businesses in the community, Yu will experience some down time in the shoulder season.

After a busy summer he will take one month off work to travel to see family and reopen in mid-November for the rush of business the winter season will bring. Yu says he is happy for the business and looks forward to taking a break.
