Laurie Bruce and Valerie Andersen learned firsthand why a business such as theirs is desperately needed in the area.
Andersen has problems with thinning hair, which had sent the pair all over British Columbia to find a suitable wig. Instead they were met with poor and, at times even embarrassing, service along with low-quality products.
They found out they were not the only ones faced with such experiences, as other friends shared their stories as well.
“This makes a tough time even worse,” said Bruce.
As a result Bruce and Andersen decided to open their own business called Bloom In-home Wig Service, which makes privacy and personalized service a top priority.
Bruce explains that buying a wig can be an emotional time, especially if you are suffering from an illness.
“You don’t want people staring at you,” says Bruce, “and salons will not allow you to take products home to try.”
That is why Bloom In-Home Wig Service will bring products tdirectly to a client’s residence.
Bruce encourages her clients to invite close family or friends to the fittings, explaining that it helps make the experience fun. Her goal is to make that time an escape from other worries and stresses.
“They can open a bottle of wine and just enjoy themselves,” says Bruce.
The women don’t charge for appointments and will stay at their client’s homes as long as needed.
“They are welcome to try on as many wigs as they like until they find the right one for them,” said Bruce. “Our goal is to make our clients look and feel pretty again. If they find the perfect wig but not the perfect colour, we will order it in.”
The women arrive with advertising-free vehicles and bags to maintain their clients privacy.
“The neighbors don’t need to know what we are doing there,” said Bruce.
Before beginning their business Bruce and Anderson were not aware of the difference between good and bad wigs, nor how to properly care for their products.
Bruce explains that her previous wigs would often be hot and itchy, but they thought “that’s just the way wigs are.”
Before opening their business, the two women extensively researched wigs. As a result they are able to supply top-quality products that look natural, are comfortable and easy to maintain.
“In this type of hot climate, poorly made wigs are even more uncomfortable, which makes it even more important to find great quality ones,” said Bruce.
Bloom In-Home Wig Service also provides eyebrows and specially made scarves and hats that cover the entire back of the head, unlike normal hats which leave half of the scalp exposed. According to Bruce one of their best selling accessories is a baseball hat with hair attached.
Bloom In-Home Wig Service is available in Salmon Arm, Kelowna and Princeton.
