The date of the closure of the Zellers store in Salmon Arm has now been confirmed.
Tiffany Bourré, external communications manager with the Hudson’s Bay Company, told the Observer in an email Friday that the Salmon Arm Zellers location will close to the public on July 28, 2012.
The Observer reported in September that Canadian Tire will be taking over the Zellers location at the Mall at Piccadilly, with plans to open a Canadian Tire store there in the spring of 2013.
The site will be remodelled to accommodate Canadian Tire’s needs, which could include a service centre, garden centre and warehouses.
Co-owner of the mall, Bill Laird, said Friday that Canadian Tire is now the mall’s tenant and is collecting rent from Zellers.
Meanwhile, a communications spokesperson at Canadian Tire’s head office told the Observer Monday that the company hasn’t yet determined what will go in the current Canadian Tire location when it is vacated in 2013.
“We have not made any decisions regarding the future of the current CT building and won’t likely do so until Spring 2013,” stated an email from the company.
The closure of the Zellers store is a result of Minnesota-based Target Corporation’s purchase of 189 Zellers leases. Many of them will re-open as Target stores, but not in Salmon Arm, where the lease was sold to Canadian Tire.
