Fridays this summer, we’ll publish a list of 10 Things to Do in Surrey — a chance to explore new places and events in the area. Email us your favourite things to do in Surrey, edit@surreynowleader.com.
1. GO BOWLING
Roll a strike at one of several Surrey-area bowling alleys, including Dell Lanes, Scottsdale Lanes and Sandscastle Bowl Bar & Grill. Bowling is also an attraction at Central City Fun Park, a year-old entertainment centre located near Pattullo Bridge.
2. GOLF WHERE THE PROS DID
Surrey’s Northview Golf and Country Club hosted PGA tournaments from 1996 to 2002, first as the Greater Vancouver Open and later as the Air Canada Championship. It’s where Mike Weir became the first Canadian in 45 years to win a PGA Tour event on Canadian soil, back in the summer of 1999.

3. GO BACK IN TIME
Celebrate Surrey’s agricultural pioneers at the sprawling Historic Stewart Farm, at 13723 Crescent Rd. The site consists of eight heritage buildings, with the 1894 Farmhouse as its focal point.
4. VIEW SOME ISLANDS
Kwomais Point Park (1367 128th St.) overlooks Semiahmoo Bay. Visitors here can drink in spectacular views year-round, including from a viewing platform on the park’s west side, where vistas of the San Juan Islands, Tsawwassen and even Vancouver Island can be enjoyed.
5. BIKE BARNSTON
Bike onto the ferry and around Barnston Island, where roads are flat and paved, and cyclists can enjoy views of the river and farms. Bring a picnic for this trip. Find maps and more on metrovancouver.org.
6. FIND INNER PEACE
Joan and Jon Mara transformed a city-owned lot to create Spirit Garden, in the 2800-block of 140th Street, a place of colour and serenity where visitors can be “rejuvenated by nature’s beauty.”
7. ADOPT A PET
Look at some of Surrey’s adoptable animals online at spca.bc.ca/locations/surrey. When you’re ready to meet your new best friend, visit Surrey SPCA’s Education and Adoption Centre, 16748 50th Ave., or call 604-574-1711.
8. BORROW A BOOK
Surrey boasts 10 public libraries across the city, with addresses posted to surreylibraries.ca/locations. For online enjoyment, check out eBooks, magazines, music, movies and more.
9. SEE SURREY’S OLDEST SCHOOL
Surrey’s oldest surviving schoolhouse is Anniedale, built in 1891 for $750. Today, the restored wood-frame building rests on the grounds of Cloverdale’s Museum of Surrey (17710 56A Ave.), as an example of where students learned in the 19th and 20th centuries.
• RELATED STORY: Surrey’s old Anniedale schoolhouse closed twice due to pandemic, moved twice.
10. GET CABIN FEVER
Also located outside the Museum of Surrey is the Anderson Cabin. Built by pioneer Eric Anderson in 1872, the structure is documented as Surrey’s oldest building still standing.
