The Nanaimo chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists is holding its first show of the year at the Waterfront Gallery in Ladysmith.
Seventy-five paintings by 45 artists from the Nanaimo area will be on display.
“It will be a big show,” chapter president Claudia Lohmann said. “And it’s really everything from abstract through portraits, landscapes … all the different mediums from our members.”
This is the second time the Nanaimo FCA is holding an exhibition at the Waterfront Gallery. Lohmann said it serves as an unjuried counterpart to the group’s yearly Fine Art Show, meaning it is more accessible to members.
Members were instructed to show new work that has yet to be displayed anywhere else.
Lohmann will be presenting a pair of paintings using art resin, which gives the works a glossy finish. It’s a new technique she’s been learning.
“I always want to try and experiment,” she said. “I’m not an artist who is doing just one thing. It’s way too interesting what you can do.”
This year’s show coincides with the Spring Art Tour taking place at venues across Cedar, Yellow Point, Ladysmith and Chemainus from April 19 to 21.
Fifteen galleries and studios, including the Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery, are taking part in the event.
Lohmann said she hopes the tour will help lead to a greater turnout for the art show.
