What does a penniless orphan slaving away in a boarding school have to sing about? Plenty, according to the musical, A Little Princess.
Adapted from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel, Sarah Crewe, the touching, familiar story is supported by beautiful musical scores.
“Princess Sara,” played by Leah Holden, is an heiress who attends Miss Minchin’s boarding school. The story portrays Sarah’s journey from riches to rags and back again as she faces the formidable Miss Minchin, played by Nonni Charles-Lundaahl and learns to be more than just a princess.
Born in India to the wealthy Captain Crewe, Sarah is shipped to England for a top-notch education at Miss Minchin’s boarding school. There, she butts heads with the snobby headmistress who is merciless when the girl falls on hard times.
The rigours she endures during her stint as a servant only build the plucky girl’s character, who perseveres and sees yet another reversal of fortune. In this play, there are lots of opportunities for dramatic songs that get you right into the spirit of the story.
The production features an NSS all-star cast with Kylie Gardner as “Miss Amelia,” Morgan Leontowicz as the spiteful “Lavinia,” Adriel Goodman as “Becky,” Dakota Simon as “Mr. Barrow” and “Mr. Carmichael” and Jessica Jones-Hanna as “Ermengarde” all bringing their talents to the production.
