A new season of dance begins

The Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre gets ready for a new season, starting Sept. 30 with Out Interspace Dance Theatre

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society proudly announces the launch of our 2016/17 Dance Series. This series consists of five diverse, high- quality shows from across Canada.

The series begins Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. with Major Motion Picture from Out Innerspace Dance Theatre. The production explores timely themes of surveillance, otherness, propaganda and belief through its eccentric and lawless characters. A hybrid performance language includes infrared technology and an on-stage surveillance system alongside Out Innerspace’s trailblazing movement invention.

Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal takes the stage Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. with repertoire from three renowned choreographers. Among Canada’s most beloved and longest running dance companies, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal brings an athletically and visually stunning contemporary performance to every show. Displaying its radiant and expressive style, BJM explores the creative side of contemporary trends, yet is still firmly committed to classical aesthetics.

Our Dance series continues Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. with Canada’s Ballet Jörgen and their timeless rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Back by popular demand, the beloved and magical full-length production returns to Vernon to delight our audiences once again. Ballet Jörgen showcases the extraordinary beauty of traditional ballet in its purest form, in a way that is engaging for a modern audience.

On April 1 at 7:30 p.m., the society welcomes Shay Keubler’s Glory. Inspired by the epic battles of childhood and a passion for action films, Glory examines the complexities of violent behaviour and its glorification in our media-drenched culture. With visceral choreography by Shay Keubler (Karoshi) for six bold and dynamic performers, Glory pushes the audience to question the purpose and reasoning of violent material in society.

Our 2016/17 Dance Series concludes April 28 at 7:30 p.m. with Atlantic Ballet Theatre`s  Phantom of the Opera. Inspired by Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel of the same name, the story has continued to excite the imaginations of readers, reaching across different cultures and eras. With original choreography by Igor Dobrovolskiy set to the music of Francis Poulenc, Phantom Of The Opera features lush costumes created by Paul Daigle and an intriguing set design by Brian Perchaluk. Pierre Lavoie’s ethereal mix of light and shadows perfectly captures the eerie world where a love triangle ensnares Erik, the beautiful ingénue whom he loves, and the dashing young viscount who wins her heart.
