Shadan Saul Guerrero and Sunny Shams will perform as soloists for the Palm Court Light Orchestra’s Feb. 10 concert.

The Palm Court Light Orchestra will present its Valentine Day concert at the Charlie White Theatre Feb. 10.

Leading the concert will be conductor Charles Job. The Orchestra is now celebrating its 30th year.

The concert will feature soloist soprano Shadan Saul Guerrero and Sidney tenor Sunny Shams.

“They’re a real crowd favourite. We love them. They’re both trying to make a career and it’s not without its challenges in this day and age. They’re really wonderful singers and delightful people,” said Job.

Guerrero will sing Mimi’s aria Si, Mi Chiamano from Puccini’s La Boheme and more, while Shams will open with Somewhere a voice is calling, and he  will sing girls were made to love and kiss and more.

With Valentine’s Day being a day to celebrate romance and love, the Orchestra will celebrate it as well, beginning with selections from Arthur Sullivan’s Pineapple Poll and Ronald Binge’s Elizabethan Serenade and more.

“We essentially play what we call light music which means we don’t play any Beethoven …” said Job, adding that they tend to play music of the last century.

With roots in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the Orchestra was once popular at the Empress Hotel when violinist Billy Tickle led a palm court orchestra until 1952.

“In modern times we would occasionally play a selection from Les Miserables and things like that, but we’ll also play the Rogers and Hamentein and that whole generation of musical theatre,” said Job.

The concert will take place Feb. 10 at the Mary Winspear Centre. For tickets call 250-656-0275.
