ASIA Sumas has taken Shakespeare’s classic love story Romeo and Juliet and turned it into a modern dance show that will be presented at the Abbotsford Arts Centre April 25 and 26.

Teacher and Dance Company director Lyndsey Hotell said the year-long project is unlike any other musical adaptation ever presented.

“There is no speaking in this show at all, the entire story is told through dance, movement, digital media projections and music,” Hotell said.

“It was a huge challenge, but it has come together into one amazing show that Abbotsford will not even believe when they see it.”

The show has quarter-pipes on the stage, skateboarders, scooter riders, live music and much more.

“We don’t want to give away all of the secrets, as we want the audience to be surprised when they see the various elements we have integrated into this show,” Hotell said. “The performers will have you laughing, singing along and crying with them also. The final scene is one of the most heartfelt, tear-jerking scenes I have ever seen.”

There will be four showings. They run Thursday, April 25 to Friday, April 26. There are two matinees, 11 a.m. each day and an evening 7 p.m. show both days. Tickets are $10, available on Eventbrite or at the door. The matinee tickets are limited at the moment, as they are both almost sold out. There are plenty of seats available for the evening shows.
