A high school choir from Nairobi, Kenya, visits Port Alberni on Monday, July 7 to give a concert of African music at Trinity Church. Concert time is 7 .. In recent years State House Girls’ Choir has won top honours in Kenya’s national music festivals and they are often asked to perform at state functions and conferences.
The choir’s recording of African Woman, written by conductor Leonard Wekesa for a 2011 international women’s conference, became a big hit on Kenyan radio stations.
The choir has come to B.C. to take part in this year’s International Choral Kathaumixw, held in Powell River July 2-5. The Kathaumixw festival organizes short tours for the visiting choirs and the proceeds of the concerts assist with their travel expenses.
Tickets for the Trinity Church performance are on sale at Rollin Arts Centre and at the church, or may be purchased at the door. Admission is $10 ($6 for children 12 years and under).
