Cathy Converse presents Against the Current: The Remarkable Life of Agnes Deans Cameron, an illustrated lecture based on her newly released book of the same name, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 in the Courtenay and District Museum.
Agnes Deans Cameron, born in Victoria in 1863, was B.C.’s first female school principal, an itinerant traveler, respected journalist, lecturer and cycler who put western Canada on the map through her encouragement of western immigration.
In commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, she was named one of the most significant individuals in the history of the province.
Cameron had a Comox Valley connection. She arrived here in 1882 to teach at the school on Mission Hill. Her home was with the Robb family of Comox which meant she had a four-mile walk to and from school each day.
Victoria author Cathy Converse has been writing for more than 30 years. She has written and co-authored six books and numerous cover stories for magazines and journals.
Against the Current: The Remarkable Life of Agnes Deans Cameron will be available for purchase ($30.00 plus tax, TouchWood Editions) and signing after the talk.
Admission to the evening is $5 per Historical Society member; $6 non-members (plus GST). Advance tickets are strongly recommended. Tickets can be purchased by phone 250-334-0686 ext. 5.
