Alberni Teens Can Rock is recruiting new members as they wind down a busy summer.
The teens were booked for six shows in September, including Salmon Fest, the Alberni District Fall Fair, Port Alberni Toy Run and the Bulldogs’ tailgate party on Friday, Sept. 16. They opened the Alberni District Fall Fair, and even won first place for bands in the Fall Fair parade, organizer and coach Todd Flaro said.
“We are recruiting kids. We’ve got a good coaching dynamic right now with myself, Greg Alkerton, Darcy Johnston and Bill Frew, and the kids are doing awesome,” Flaro said.
“We’ve done 14 shows between June and September.”
The program was formed last year to give some of Port Alberni’s young musicians the opportunity to play together as a group. Kids age out at 19, but are better able to find an adult band to join, Flaro said.
“We’re looking for intermediate and advanced [musicians],” Flaro said. “We don’t teach you how to play, we teach you how to perform.”
Alberni Teens Can Rock practice every Thursday from 6–9 p.m. The location varies, so new members are encouraged to contact Flaro through the Alberni Teens Can Rock Facebook page.
Flaro said the group has some “cool stuff” coming up this year.
