A musical family from Calgary, Alberta will be presenting one of their sound journeys in Parksville July 16.
Funds generated from the concert at Knox United Church in Parksville will help support Society of Organized Services (SOS).
Damian Jordan may live in Alberta where he has a job that pays the bills but he admitted he would love to call Parksville home.
He said he and his family have spent many happy vacations in Parksville and Qualicum Beach so he wanted to help a charity in this area.
“I thought it would be fun to give back and raise some money for a local good cause,” explained the musician.
He said Knox United Church is donating their venue for the concert and local accompanist Margaret Nelson will join him, his wife Mandy Loban-Jordan who will be playing the flute and his daughter Katrina who will play piano.
Jordan said he has a passion for classical settings of traditional folk songs and he will be presenting some in a formal concert called Over the Mountains – Songs of Love and Longing.
“We are performing a collection of folk songs in classical arrangements. There is something timeless about these pieces.”
Songs from Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Africa and Korea are included.”
He said the theme will follow a young man who sets out to find love, meets lots of interesting people on the way and eventually ends up finding himself.
“The spiritual story is strung together by songs. As he roams around and falls in love and then longing, he realizes there is more and becomes more hopeful.”
To say that music in Jordan’s blood is an understatement.
Jordan began singing in choral groups when he was just nine years old.
At age 14 he started composing and then completed his undergraduate degree in composition at the University of Bangor, North Wales.
He said he also enjoys volunteering and often shares his music with residents in some of Alberta’s retirement facilities.
The SOS is thrilled that he wants to share his music with people on Vancouver Island and generate some revenue for them.
“SOS is very grateful when people organize fundraisers for us and we are thrilled that Damian chose SOS as the beneficiary for his concert,” said Renate Sutherland, SOS Executive Director. “Now that we’ve recently expanded to offer our services from Qualicum Beach, this comes at a welcome time.”
Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $15 and available at SOS Thrift Store and at Knox United Church.
