You’ve probably heard Ali Hassan’s voice on CBC Radio.
He is the host of Laugh Out Loud, a frequent guest host on q and the host of Canada Reads. He is also an actor and stand-up comedian; CBC television viewers may remember him from his season as the lead comedy panelist on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight.
The Capitol Theatre is wrapping up the 2018-19 season of live performances with Hassan’s stand-up comedy show Muslim Interrupted on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Hassan does not practise Islam, which can challenge people’s notions of what a Muslim should be — he has trouble explaining to his children why their Muslim family doesn’t go to the mosque — and why he eats pork.
The nuances between religion and culture are not always easy for many people to understand, let alone for a five year old.
He describes Muslim, Interrupted as an exploration of the “ins and outs” and “stops and starts” with Islam. His hope is that, through the show he can both entertain and inform while demonstrating the similarities between Muslims and their fellow citizens.
The show ran at both Just for Laughs in Montreal and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Hassan has received accolades and an enormous amount of press coverage in the past two years as he tours it in major cities across Canada.
Tickets can be purchased in person or by phone at 250-352-6363 from the Capitol Theatre box office today and tomorrow from noon to 4:30 p.m. or online at capitoltheatre.ca .
