Bradner will be blooming this weekend with the 89th Bradner Flower Show.
The annual show devoted flowers and plants runs April 7 to 9 and attracts thousands to Bradner Hall and Elementary School.
The Bradner Flower Show was started in 1928 by area pioneer Fenwick Fatkin for local growers to showcase their daffodils, and Bradner has become famous as the “Daffodil Capital of Canada.”
The show is produced by the Bradner Community Club, a longstanding service organization operated on a volunteer basis. Fenwick’s family is involved in the show to this day, with granddaughter Pauline serving as chair of the show.
On Friday, Scott Pearce of GardenWorks officially opens the show at 2 p.m. There will also bethe Bradner Elementary Hand Bell Choir. Scott will be on hand after the opening ceremony just outside the doors in the “Speaker’s Corner” to answer all of your gardening questions.
Other special guests throughout the weekend include Bert the Mole Man, Chris Bodnar of Glen Valley Organic Farm, and Matt Groves, a hybridizing expert who will go through the process on how new daffodil varieties are created. Chef Travis Petersen will be cooking, and there will be wine tasting demos from local wineries Singletree and Campbell’s Gold.
In addition to the hundreds of varieties of daffodils that local growers present each year, there will be plant sales, crafts, and food. Proceeds from cut flowers sales are donated to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.
On Saturday and Sunday there’s additional displays in the Bradner School gym courtesy of the Langley Spinners and Weavers, the Abbotsford Quilters, and more.
