Armstrong’s Tapestry Women’s Choir is spreading some much needed goodwill to its community when the choir and some special guests perform in concert, Sunday.
While the theme of the concert is “peace on Earth,” musical selections from around the world will be sung by the 34-voice choir, including both modern and traditional songs.
“Music has the power to transcend, to transport and heal through lyrics, vocal harmony and instrumental arrangements,” said Tapestry member Dorianne Kohl. “At a time when, as a community, we have suffered many tragic losses and uncertainty (these past few months), it is our hope that we can help to restore some of the harmony and peace of mind to our audience.”
Led by Len Wood Middle School music teacher Deborah Mehes, the choir works towards achieving vocal harmony through months of rehearsals.
“It is an opportunity for audiences to enjoy the magical season of Christmas, and to be transported to other lands, other times and places,” said Kohl.
The choir is welcoming special guest, violinist Jane Russell from the Juno-nominated Silver Birch Quartet of Sudbury, Ont., who will present a solo performance.
A former student of Vernon music teacher Ken Stromberg, Russell will present a couple of selections, while another special guest, Chris McMahen, author of four children’s books and a former winner of Okanagan College’s short story contest, will read two of his “adult” short stories, interspersed with music.
Refreshments –– hot apple cider, tea, coffee, and home-baked goods made by choir members –– will be served at intermission and are included in the ticket price. All proceeds go to the performing arts in local schools.
Tapestry performs at 1:30 p.m. and at 4 p.m. at Centennial Theatre in Armstrong. Tickets are $10 and are available at The Brown Derby Café in Armstrong (250-546-8221), or Hungry Jacks Café in Enderby or from choir members.
