An upcoming Langley art show promises more than just “pretty pictures.”
The TabulaRASA artists collective is presenting its fourth exhibition of artistic photographs, titled Outlooks: No Kittens, No Kardashians.
John Ostaf, an artist with the collective, said the subtitle means the group is taking on a more creative form of photography.
“We’re not just taking pretty pictures of sunsets.”
Ostaf has been taking photos since 1955, and said a lot has changed since then, including the evolution from film to digital photography.
Ostaf said he enjoys digital photography because it allows him to manipulate the image.
“I can take a picture and do what we call layering, image after image, to change the concept.”
Most of his photos are “artistic and abstract,” as Ostaf likes to digitally alter colours and textures.
“Everything we are creating is leaning more towards the artistic vein, rather than straight photography.”
The TabulaRASA artists collective started three years ago. The name is Latin for ‘blank slate.’
Ostaf said his favourite piece that he has contributed to the exhibit is called Floating Hydrangea. The photo is created by a series of images inspired by the Sargasso Sea that Ostaf has manipulated into an image of “a world that one would never see.”
The Outlooks exhibit opened Oct. 26 and runs until Jan. 3 at the Timms Community Centre at 20399 Douglas Cres.
All 10 of the artists are attending the artist reception on Nov. 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
