A 278 square metres workspace for professional artists is inviting the public to a pre-launch event.
The Art House Penticton is a project of Cowork Penticton, based on the idea of allowing artists working in a wide range of media to rent space and provide an opportunity to share ideas between other artists.
“Since we opened (Cowork), we have had people come through asking for certain facilities that we couldn’t offer here and that was the artistic community,” said Cowork Penticton co-owner Jennifer Vincent. “Artists are the original co-workers. They have been in collaborative, collective studios since time in memorial. We can’t really service that here we don’t have the ventilation or the cleanup space or any of that. I strongly believe in supporting the artistic community and my husband is an artist and it was something that always rolled around in our mind.”
The Art House, located in the industrial area at 2345 Government St. is opening in November as a fixed location for committed creatives and artists. It has both dedicated and common workspaces, a mixture of full time and casual member artisans who will be able to use the space. Vincent said Art House Penticton will bring together artists to work together to even hold small events or exhibitions.
There are six dedicated studio spaces, four of which have been reserved already. Dedicated studio space can be rented by month or shared by artists and there is also a casual membership which allows artists to store some materials in a cupboard, set up in the common areas while they are there and put things away when they leave.
“There are tool benches and space for some dirty art to be carried out like sculpting or welding. There certainly are spaces for fine artists with paint, canvas or drawing but it also lends itself to clay or a kiln and we will build on that as we progress,” said Vincent.
