As the winter weather continues, Stone Soup is once again reminding people that they can help to end homelessness in Mission.
The organization’s winter fundraiser – the Pick UR Art Raffle – is underway, in an effort to build a program that will help connect people in need to the resources available in Mission.
“It’s remarkable how often we hear from people that simply don’t know that help is available,” said Paul Horn, one of the Stone Soup Initiative’s leaders.
“The reality is that people are often hard to find, but people who have lived through homelessness can be our biggest asset in connecting with people currently living rough.”
Funds raised from this year’s raffle will be used to help train and fund navigators, people with lived experience who can provide some additional outreach capacity.
The raffle itself is a community-based project. Artworks have been contributed by some generous local donors and artists, including Ilona Fekete, Carol-Anne Almquist, Ela Chmielowski, Laurie Stricker and Tony Kloschinsky. Winners can choose from 10 different pieces.
Tickets are $5 each or three for $10, available at Rex Cox Menswear, Belle’s Sports, ZZ Cuts, Trendy or What Knot, and Mission Community Services.
The draw will take place at MCSS on Dec. 22.
The Stone Soup Initiative is a made-in-Mission solution to homelessness. It works in partnership with the District of Mission, engaged citizens and many community service providers to address homelessness and its contributing factors.
