Artist holds Awakening at Bean to Cup

Local emerging artist Meena Trikala Alves is trading in fashion for art when she shows her work in the exhibition, Awakening, at the Bean to Cup Downstairs Gallery.

The self-taught artist, who was a fashion consultant for a retail outlet, says she has a passion and love for creating that goes back as far as she can remember.

“Growing up with very encouraging and supportive parents, I have been fortunate enough to have been able to experiment in all forms and mediums of art,” she said. “As a child, I started off sketching faces and figures with pencil, charcoal and pastels then tried my hand at painting using oils, acrylics and watercolours. I have also dabbled a bit in sculpting, ceramics and pottery.”

While also raising a family, Alves has found a new love for design. Jumping back into her art full time two years ago was a natural progression, she said.

“My paintings are mostly large canvas, heavily textured abstract art using acrylic, oils and metallic paints. I am so blessed to have always been able to work in the fields that showcase my talent and passion.”

An opening night reception for Alves’ exhibition is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. A portion of all drinks sold that night will be donated to the Kindale Developmental Association. Alves’ art will be available for viewing until the end of the summer.
