Arts around Alberni: from midsummer art to Tea on the Terrace start

Don’t miss a summer favourite with this week’s Tea on the Terrace musical guest, Hank Mallon, Thursday July 12 the Rollin Art Centre.

Tea on the Terrace will run every Thursday until August 23. Call today to reserve your spot at 250-724-3412, as seating is limited. Tickets are available in advance for $10 at the Rollin Art Centre. Price includes tea, light lunch and musical entertainment from 1–3 p.m.

Rumour has it some of the Centennial Belles will be on hand roaming the gardens and serving tea.

In case of rain the teas will be held at Char’s Landing.

The musical lineup for the summer includes:

July 19 – Doug Gretsinger; July 26 – Paul Kurucz: solo; Aug. 2 – Yvonne Gibbon; Aug. 9 – Classical Tub; Aug. 16 – Old Time Fiddlers; Aug. 23 – The Travelers (Paul Kurucz and his daughters).

Celebrate with summer art

Children’s summer art programs are back this summer at the Rollin Art Centre, for children ages five to eight years. Each week is a different theme so call now and book your spot.

The three-day weekly programs are $20, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for ages five and six, and 1–3 p.m. for seven- and eight-year-olds. Please call 250-724-3412.

You don’t need to apply to get these passports! Pick up a passport at the Rollin Art Centre, Alberni Valley Museum, Maritime Museum or the Tourist Information centre and embark on a journey of discovery as you celebrate Port Alberni’s Centennial.

u Port Alberni Harbour-1912 at the Maritime Discovery Centre.

Have your passports stamped along the way. When you have all three stamps, hand in your passport to receive a centennial pin.

Speaking of centennial…

Centennial Inspirations is the title of a unique art exhibit showcasing local artists at the Rollin Art Centre.

Inspiration was taken from 1912 photos the artists randomly selected. Each artist added their own style when creating this exhibit.

Centennial Inspirations will run in the gallery from June 16 to Aug. 15. The gallery is located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Argyle Street. The facility is wheelchair accessible and admission is free.

Artisans’ market on Sat.

Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Rollin Art Centre will be having an Artisan’s Market in the garden. Add a lovely stroll through the gardens while watching the artists create one-of-a-kind pieces or just stop by to chat with the artists themselves.

The market runs all summer for the months of July and August. Artists interested in renting a table are asked to please call Melissa Martin for more info at 250-724-3412.

Mid-summer art show

The Art Rave Society of Alberni presents A Midsummer’s Eve Art Show and Dance on Friday, July 20 at the Bavarian Centre, 3031 Fourth Ave. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Rollin Art Centre, Island Gallery on Argyle Street, Clock Tower Gallery, Jenny’s Fine Foods and Flandangles.

Come mingle and enjoy the works of local artists and the music of the Barry Bruyere Trio. This is also a membership drive; at 8:30 p.m. meet the board and hear about the 2013 juried art show and arts festival. At 9 p.m. dance the night away with the music of Maloomba Boogie band.

Wedding time at the Rollin

The Rollin Art Centre gardens are a wonderful backdrop for any special occasion and perfect for a summer wedding. The Rollin Art Centre Garden  has openings in July.  Call 250-724-3412 for more information.
