Arts around: Pumpkin carvers stump judges

Champion pumpkin carvers, Wednesday painters and more on the Alberni arts scene this week.

The Rollin Art Centre held its first annual pumpkin carving contest voting on Halloween night. With plenty of jack-o-lanterns to choose from it was hard to pick the winners. Although the rain kept many away, the brave battled the storm to make very creative carved pumpkins for our wonderful family event. Look for this family event to return next year.

The winners from each category are as follows:

4-6 yr. olds; first place Eli Baily / 7-10 yr. olds; first place Timmea Williams, second place Taryn Baldwin, third place Raque Thompson / 11-13 yr. olds; first place Ioan Treleaven, second place Jessica Norn / 14-17 yr. olds; first place Ilya Treveaven, second place Niklaus Treleaven, third place Mackenzie Berry / 18+ first place; Kevin Philips, second place Janice Konkin, third place Jennifer Norn / Group; first place Tayler and Samantha Barrowcliff, second place Jessica and Chris Hall.

Thank you to all who participated. And a special thanks to artist, Bill Townsend and Tim Hortons for providing prizes. Winners can pick up their prizes at the Rollin Art Centre.

Time winds down for show

Time is running out to get down to the Rollin Art Centre and view this terrific exhibit showcasing local potter Elspeth Watson and painter, Norm Nicholson.

Watson’s pieces are whimsical and beautiful; she captures her love of pottery in every piece she created.

Nicholson’s watercolours are soft to the eye and tranquil to the soul. This exhibit wraps up Nov. 15.

Wednesday Painters next

The next art exhibit in the Rollin Art Centre gallery will be another wonderful display by a group of valley painters.

The Alberni Valley Wednesday Painters take the spotlight starting Nov. 18 and will remain in the gallery until Dec. 20.

Meet all 16 of the  artists and view their work at the gallery on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 1-3 p.m., for their combined artists’ reception.
