Authors nominated for B.C. Book prizes to read in Vernon

Three B.C. authors nominated for 2011 B.C. Book Prizes are on tour in the Okanagan this month.

George Bowering, Julie Flett and Derek Lundy will give free public readings from their nominated works and will sign books.

They will be in Vernon April 18 in an event co-hosted by the Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library and Gallery Vertigo.

Canada’s first poet laureate, Bowering, who was raised in Oliver, is nominated in the poetry category for his work titled My Darling Nellie Grey. The publication includes poems for each month of the year Bowering experienced in 2006.

Vancouver-based Métis artist Flett is nominated for the Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize for her illustrations in the picture book Owls See Clearly at Night: A Michif Alphabet.

Salt Spring Island author Derek Lundy is nominated for his book Borderlands: Riding the Edge of America in the non-fiction category, in which he recounts his experiences riding his motorcycle along the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada.

The ORL has copies of all three books, as well as other B.C. Book Prizes nominees, available in its collection.

The Lieutenant Governor’s B.C. Book Prize Gala will be held April 21 in West Vancouver.

The three authors will read at Vernon’s Gallery Vertigo, 3001-31st St., upstairs, at 7 p.m. Monday April 18.
