With Ravel’s iconic Bolero setting a distinct tone from the outset, the dancers initially embody the fun and frivolity, which eventually gives way to a more sombre mood and transitions into a visual spiral into madness.

Walking Mad is the latest work of acclaimed choreographer Johan Inger and audiences are in for a treat.

“Walking Mad is a riotous hit, a clever, surreal romp set to Ravel’s Bolero,” said the Boston Globe critic.

Walking Mad is accompanied by two new pieces of work, Between Disappearing and Becoming by Ballet BC’s artistic director Emily Molnar and Vitulare, the stunning new work from Canada’s rising star choreographer Aszure Barton.

Phenomenal classical and contemporary training has produced a diverse and high-calibre ballet company in Ballet BC, unique in their dynamic movements, creativity, and the exalting passion of their performances.

They will be spellbinding to watch.

Creative, powerful, surprising, joyful and at times heart-rending, these words have described the work Aszure Barton, who’s new piece Vitulare will also be performed on the Cultural Centre’s main stage March 17. Barton has created for Mikhail Baryshnikov, The National Ballet of Canada, American Ballet Theater, Sydney Dance Company, Netherlands Dans Theater, The Martha Graham Dance Company and Hubbard Street Dance. Her work is both modern and stimulating, and promises to mesmerize all who venture out.

Presenting a diverse repertoire of Canadian and international contemporary ballet from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Ballet BC brings a new level of awareness and creative collaborations that are engaging, passionate and transformative.

As a cultural institution, they bring value and opportunity to the life of the community, providing a creative place and a collaborative environment aimed at creating dance at its most essential: visceral, powerful, and thought provoking. Walking Mad and Other Works brings this to life like no other show.
