A ’90s tribute band that “cut our teeth” at the Queen’s is returning to the Nanaimo venue to mark the start of the new year.
Victoria’s Big Shiny Dudes – lead guitarist Drew Bennett, drummer Kyle White, rhythm guitarist Morley Graff and bassist Brett Stevens – play the Queen’s on Dec. 31.
“This show coming up this New Year’s will actually be our first time playing there in probably about six or seven months,” Stevens said.
The bassist said he and his bandmates were all born in the ’80s and grew up during the ’90s and the songs of that era mean a lot to them and their age cohort.
Stevens said that’s the decade where substance made a comeback and triumphed over style in popular music.
“For me it’s when the music was becoming real again,” Stevens said. “There’s a big area in the ’80s there where music videos were taking over and glam rock and things were more about the look of a band and the flash as opposed to the music itself, whereas in the ’90s it got back to the raw music again.”
WHAT’S ON … Big Shiny Dudes play the Queen’s, 34 Victoria Cres., on Tuesday, Dec. 31 starting at 9 p.m. Tickets $20, available at the venue. 19-plus show.
