KC Adams’ exhibition Birchbark Technology will open with a reception, artist talk, and community engagement opportunities at the Comox Valley Art Gallery Saturday, Jan. 18, starting at 1 p.m.
Adams, a Winnipeg-based artist of Cree and Ojibwa descent, is currently in residence in Courtenay as she prepares new work and embellishes existing work that embraces past and current technologies.
“This work explores the relationship I have with my ancestors’ territorial land and water,” said Adams. “I am interested in my ancestors’ knowledge and how they worked with land and water technologies to thrive.”
Birchbark Technology includes digital prints of circuit boards and birchbark, embellished with painting and beading.
Adams’ work also includes video about how the land, water and Indigenous people are impacted by the construction of hydro dams.
The gallery will also present drawings by Queneesh Elementary students that explore the theme of how water flows through the land and our lives. The drawings were developed to inspire artist Jason Craft as he developed the concept for the new mural that surrounds school’s entrance.
Saturday’s opening reception will include an artist talk, community engagement, refreshments and socializing. The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Donations are gratefully accepted.
The exhibition will run until March 7. CVAG is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
