As Halloween approcahes, it seems fitting to watch more scary movies.
Some people prefer not to watch scary movies, but this is a good and funny one that isn’t too terrifying.
Grabbers is the story of a small island off the coast of Ireland that must face a terrifying alien monster from the depths of the sea.
You won’t find this movie in the new releases, since it was released in 2012, but there is a stacked section of horror comedy movies in the rental section. It was difficult to choose which movie to rent, and I decided on Grabbers because it has been a favourite since the first time I watched it.
The movie is part horror, part drunken debauchery, part strange and unpredictable love story.
There clearly wasn’t a lot of money put into this film, as it lacks a lot of typical hollywood effects, but it adds to the genuine and realistic feel of life on a small island.
Grabbers really isn’t that scary. It isn’t suitable for children because of the swearing, mild decapitations, and excessive alcohol consumption. This movie will have you chuckling at the characters, and shaking your head in disbelief that some people can be so clueless.
The main character is a (semi) functioning alcoholic police officer, who has a woman officer from the mainland join him on duty to cover another person’s vacation. He says she will be bored on the island, but she says it’s always the sleepy places where the messed up stuff happens.
Needless to say, she is right.
What surprises me the most is that there wasn’t a dequel to Grabbers. It’s all set up nicely by the end of the movie, and could be a sequel of Jurassic proportions, but in six years there hasn’t been anything.
For those who love shark movies and tacky horror comedies, Grabbers is for you. It has all the elements of terrible horror, mixed with terrible comedy, and is just terrible enough to be worth the watch.
I give Grabbers three out of 10 popcorns, because it is really bad, but in a good way.
