Bizarre Review: The Meg is the right amount of kitsch

Ever since Jaws, I have been a sucker for shark movies.

Ever since Jaws, I have been a sucker for shark movies.

There are so many out there, and they are usually campy, with terrible acting and even worse story lines.

The Meg is a good production, and touches on just the right amount of campiness.

In an underwater research lab, scientists and divers work together to go where no researchers have ever gone before. The Meg seems to encompass everything you’d expect from an ocean-themed movie about sharks, drawing inspiration from science fiction movies about opening a portal in space, and letting all the alien invaders through.

Those who are a bit uncomfortable with the idea of being trapped deep underwater might want to avoid this movie. A lot of the film is set underwater in an unexplored part of the ocean. Some of it comes up for a breath of fresh air on a boat, but there’s enough terror involved in fishing for a large shark.

The acting isn’t great, but that’s just what you can expect from a shark movie. The best acting is done by the little girl, the daughter of one of the head researchers. At least there is a bit of character development in this movie. The main diver, played by Jason Statham, has his own drama with not wanting to be a part of the crew. But, he gives in fairly easily, and joins the rescue mission. His ex wife is part of the existing crew, but nothing transpires between them. A little more drama could have added more human interest to the movie, but Statham’s character falls for another gorgeous gal on board. The cuteness level adds to the movie in just the right kind of kitschy way.

There are a few moments that might make you jump, but overall there’s so much action that the “wow” factor wears off, and you become fully submerged in the movie.

I probably wouldn’t rent The Meg again, and I’m glad I didn’t get excited enough to see it in theatres, but it is worth your time if you like cheese and sharks.

This is a good one to watch with family or friends. Break out the popcorn, and enjoy the view from the bottom of the Pacific.

I give The Meg seven out of 10 popcorns.
