The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford hosts two Black History Month events in February during Canada’s 150th birthday year.

A panel discussion titled A Look Inwards to Make Change Outward takes place Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at The Reach (32388 Veterans Way) and examines topics related to the black community.

It features poetry readings and an open dialogue among moderator Marc Forcier, digitization coordinator at The Reach Archives and history student at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV); the audience; and a diverse range of panelists.

The panelists include: Danica Jelene Denommé, curriculum developer and facilitator of Diversity Education at Abbotsford Community Services; Youeal Abera, Simon Fraser University student/activist; Michelle Ndizeye, UFV bachelor of arts graduate and former president of UFV Black Connections Club; and Holly Bishu, co-founder and organizer of Black Lives Matter Vancouver.

The second event – a free community cultural celebration – takes place Saturday, Feb. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event includes speakers, live music, a fashion show, hands-on kids’ activities –including clay pinch-pots and beading – and African and Caribbean foods.

Throughout February, The Reach team will feature ongoing learning tools in the foyer, including an I Spy Game and Polite Ways to Ask Where are You From?
