Blackberry Wood entertained with their eclectic style and gypsy beats on Feb. 23.

The self-described “alt-gypsy-country-circus” band had three of their players up from Vancouver in 100 Mile House to play at the Critical Mass Pop-Up Gallery.

The band even pulled local-talent Dan “Dano” Thompson up on stage to jam along with them on the harmonica.

A small crowd of about 40 to 50 filled the space for an intimate, but by no means quiet, evening.

With a trumpet player known as “Swamp Donkey,” ukulele, washboard and percussion player “Electric Tesla” and lead singer and kazoo player Kris Wood, the band took the small crowd on a voyage involving gypsies and circus acts.

By the end of the concert, people were up on their feet and dancing.

“I liked the energy and everything about it,” says Lona Scott who went to the concert with a group of girlfriends. “It didn’t feel like you were sitting in a little small town. It was not your normal country performance. That was what I really liked.”

Scott says she had “no idea what to expect,” when she went to the concert but “I knew they were going to be a little different.”

Today, she owns their CD and says she would go watch them again anytime.”

“I thought they were awesome and very entertaining.”
