Cari Burdett’s sixth annual Winter Solstice is scheduled for Sunday, Dec 18, at Sylvan United Church starting at 3 p.m.
This show, a fixture every year for fans, will feature Burdettt’s acclaimed singing, along with fado singer Sara Marreiros and their musician friends.
It’s all about using music and movement to provide warmth and peace as the days get shorter.
“Every year we offer an array of different songs and 2016 will not disappoint,” Burdett said. “We’re bringing some original interpretations of some old classics by Judy Garland, Barbara Streisand, and music from 1954’s White Christmas with Bing Crosby, too. We are also offering some gorgeous songs performed a cappella with close-knit, mesmerizing harmonies.”
The selections include ‘Riu Riu’ from Spain, ‘Siberian Snows’ from Russia, Jane Siberry’s ‘Calling All Angels’, a classic fado performed by Marreiros, a French 1940’s classic ‘Mon Coeur est un Violon’, as well as Christmas favourites, ‘Es ist Ein Ros Entsprungen’, ‘Sleigh Ride’ and ‘Carol of the Bells’.
The line-up includes Richard Moody (violin), Adrian Dolan (piano, accordion, guitar), Anne Schaefer (piano, guitar, vocals), Alex Remple (bass, vocals) and Marreiros and Burdett (vocals). Dancer, Marisa Jackson, adds movement to complete the sensory experience.
To celebrate the turning wheel of the year, the group will invite the audience to join them in creating an improvised soundscape, and the evening will close with a hand-clapping sing-along of ‘This little Light of Mine’.
