The curtain is opening on new programs at the Caetani Cultural Centre in 2017.

The centre, housed on the historic Caetani property on Vernon’s Pleasant Valley Road, is expanding its programs to include a new youth theatre workshop, among other workshops made possible by the completion of the new Caetani Studio Gallery, a multi-purpose facility that opened in July.

“The facility was built by the community and for the community,” said Caetani board chair Angelika Jaeger. “The funds for the construction of the studio gallery were raised thanks to the success of several past Splash of Red fundraising events. It is the artists, sponsors, donors, and volunteers who built this. We are so grateful to have such tremendous support for this organization.”

The expansion of the centre’s programs and infrastructure is part of the vision that late artist Sveva Caetani had in mind when she bequeathed her family’s property to the community.

“She would be pleased that we are continuing her legacy, especially in developing youth programs,” said centre manager Susan Brandoli. “When she donated the house and grounds to the City of Vernon more than 20 years ago, she envisioned a vibrant and flourishing cultural centre that would benefit the citizens of the North Okanagan. We are working hard to open access to the facility and achieve her vision.”

Besides ongoing artist and writing residencies and live music events, the centre will welcome the return of the Oak Table women’s writing sessions, with local scribe Lorna Tureski, as well as a basic photography introduction workshop with local lensman Eric Draht.

Both workshops start in early January. Also starting is the new youth theatre program.

Taught by Amelia Sirianni, students will be introduced to acting techniques and theatre skills, including improvisation, character building, script analysis, creative movement, and vocal work.

Classical theatre (Shakespeare!), along with contemporary plays, will be studied and performed in a workshop-style environment where emphasis will be put on directing and collaborating together as a team.

Throughout the 10-week session and a final showcase performance, the budding young thespians will hone the necessary skills to succeed in theatre and beyond.

Originally from Vernon, Sirianni spent the last decade working as a professional actor in Toronto. She received her formal professional training at the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts and has since performed on stages across North America as well as in film and TV.

Favourite roles include Deedee Doodle in The Doodlebops Live national tours, Strawberry Shortcake in Strawberry Shortcake and Friends North American tours, and Widget in the runaway Fringe and Next Stage Festival hit The Tiki Bikini Beach Paradise Party A-Go-Go.
