The Salt Spring National Art Prize, with $41,000 in awards, is now open for entries for 2021.
“The Salt Spring National Art Prize recognizes, showcases, and publicizes the accomplishments of Canadian visual artists and advances public appreciation of visual arts. We encourage artists whose work demonstrates originality, quality, integrity and creativity to submit pieces with real visual impact and depth of meaning. We are committed to mounting a live exhibition in September 2021 while respecting public health protocols in place at that time,” a press release for the prize said.
SSNAP will showcase approximately 50 finalists chosen by a national jury, who will not know who the artists are as they make their selections. The four-person jury is made up of Judy Anderson, an associate professor of Canadian Indigenous Studio Art at the University of Calgary; David Diviney, the senior curator at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax; Ydessa Hendeles, an artist-curator and philanthropist; and Michelle Jacques, the chief curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
There will be 10 prizes awarded, with a first prize of $15,000, and a $5,000 Salt Spring Island artist residency. There will be four juror’s choice awards, four people’s choice awards and one award for a Salt Spring artist.
To be eligible you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and be 18 years old or older as of Jan. 1, 2020.
Artists should submit their two- or three-dimensional works for consideration. It is hoped an exhibition of the finalists work will take place at Mahon Hall on Salt Spring Island in September or October.
Entry closes on May 31.
