Camera club releases shutter on new photo exhibit

Vernon Camera Club shows what's in front of their lenses at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre's Coat Check Gallery.

On a crisp winter afternoon in January, the Vernon Camera Club visited Caravan Farm Theatre in Spallumcheen for an afternoon of photographing horses.

“The various teams of draft horses make good subjects and they were all willing to model for the camera,” said John Gallant, with the club.

This field trip is just one of the many activities camera club members participate in throughout the year and the results of what’s in front of their lenses are about to be shown in an exhibition at the Coat Check Gallery at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre.

“The show features subjects from around the world as many members often travel, but never without a camera in hand,” said Gallant. “The print display shows colour, monochrome and abstract art and is displayed on a variety of print mediums.”

The Vernon Camera Club is a group of local photographers made up of professional, amateur and beginners, who meet regularly to improve their craft.

“The club strives to improve the art and technology of photography in all its forms,” said Gallant. “Various software programs are available to edit photos as the majority of photos are taken in digital format.”

The club is also a member of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (www.capacanada.ca) and often scores well in various national competitions.

An open house reception for the club’s exhibition is open to the public Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m., with light refreshments available.

“This is the only time the public will have access to the show as patrons attending an event at the PAC are normally the only ones who can view the display,” said Gallant.

The show continues until April 26 and can be viewed by anyone attending an event at the centre. Information about the club’s activities can be found at www.vernoncameraclub.com.
