Campbell River grown pianist, Matthew Blackburn, will perform a solo recital at Trinity Presbyterian Church Oct. 29.
The recital program is unified by “themes and variations,” which are featured in each piece.
These include solo works by Beethoven, Liszt, Canadian composer Jacques Hetu, as well as Brahms, Blackburn was born and raised in Campbell River.
After completing high school, Blackburn received an Associate of the Victoria Conservatory of Music in both piano performance and pedagogy. At the same time he completed his ARCT at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. In 2009, Blackburn completed a Bachelor of Music at the University of Lethbridge.
As a result of winning the Lethbridge Young Artists competition, he performed with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra in 2009. Since completing his undergraduate degree, Blackburn has been performing extensively. In 2010, he won the honour of performing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Also in 2010, he performed in the Fort McLeod International Festival and the Kelowna PianoForte Festival. He has also studied and performed in France for the past three summers.
This past spring he won the prestigious Virginia Graczak Music Scholarship in Campbell River. Presently, Blackburn is working on a Masters of Music in piano performance at the University of Calgary. The concert will take place at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 145 Simms Road, at 7:30 p.m.
