Canadian jazz guitarist, Nathan Hiltz will accompany Genie-nominated songstress, Terra Hazelton on a whirlwind 11-stop West Coast tour.
The tour, which includes a stop at the Dream Café in Penticton on Oct. 27, is in support of Hazelton’s brand new album That’s All. Venturing away from the highly-produced sounds of her last effort, Gimme Whatcha Got, That’s All is a pared-down tribute to early jazz recordings. The album features classics including Ellington’s, In My Solitude and the title track, That’s All by Alan Brandt and Bob Haymes.
Hazelton also explores some new numbers, such as the heart-wrenching ballad, Lure of The Little Voices, written by Jeff Gladstone with lyrics from the poem of the same name by Canadian poet, Robert Service.
Set for a November release, this tour will give fans a sneak preview of the new album which features Nathan Hiltz on guitar, and Jordan O’Connor playing bass. Hiltz has been playing sold out venues in multiple tours across the country and has quickly earned the reputation of the most promising Canadian guitarist of his generation.
Like the thousands of 78’s that line Hazelton’s living room walls, That’s All was recorded live off the floor in a Toronto studio. The album harkens back to an era of jazz recordings that were cut to wax live, while the band was playing — no editing, no re-takes and certainly, no auto-tune.
The album is about expression, says producer and bassist, Jordan O’Connor.
“I think music has in many ways lost touch with their roots expression — and expression is a wonderful thing … This album has been about expressing who we are, not what we wish we were.” said O’Connor.
Hazelton agrees.
“Jazz roots came out of expressionism, and improvisation was borne of the need to express. This true artistic need is, these days, often over-shadowed by the desire for perfection and the technical advancements that contemporary recording can provide,” she said. “It’s terrifying to release something so raw. But it’s real.”
The Calgary native got her start as the front-woman of Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards. Known for her wry wit and outstanding improvisational skills, she has since gone on to garner international acclaim with a Genie-nomination for her role as Trish in the cult-classic Fubar II. With her seductive charm, Terra guarantees to lead her audience into a world of arch-top guitars, heartthrob sidemen and the classy dames who ruled them.
