After a very successful first offering in 2010, the Carousel of Nations returns this Saturday to serve up food, music, culture, entertainment and family fun from around the world.
Okanagan College Program Coordinator and event organizer Mary Kline says the event is about broadening horizons and showcasing what we’ve got to offer.
“The event has fun activities for the community and there are not a lot of chances to learn about multiculturalism in Revelstoke,” Kline said. “Because it is so well planned, there’s something for everyone, and it’s free except for the food. People like the slide shows, the food, the performances, children’s’ activities and the storytelling.”
The free event runs from 4–7 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Revelstoke Community Centre. There are many, many events running concurrently — check the calendar for exact times.
Here are a few highlights:
– Amanda Wright is one of four storytellers featured in the Macpherson room. She’ll be reading, The Mitten: A Ukrainian Folktale.
– The crafts room features many stations where you can learn to make origami, dream-catchers, Chinese New Year crafts and more.
– There are six different travel slide presentations, including From the Land of the Rising Sun to the Land of the Falling Snow by Naoko Swift, and Growing Up in Brunei by local dentist Philomena Gale.
– Live performances on stage include Vancouver-based Tambura Rasa at 4:15. They describe a show “packed with fiery Spanish guitar, fully orchestrated Baladi Gypsy string section, burning Afro-Latin percussion.”
On stage at 5:15 is new Revelstokian Bartolo Armenteros, who will be demonstrating Cuban dance styles for the crowd. He is followed by Maritime Kitchen Party.
Aboriginal Hoop Dancer Dallas Arcand anchors the stage performances with a final set running from 6:15 to 7 p.m.
Also featured are many ethnic foods and several static displays and more.
