Cascadia Wind Ensemble plays special concert Nov. 11

Remembrance Day concert at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium

The Cascadia Wind Ensemble’s annual Remembrance concert – Cascadia Remembers: Veterans and Vera Lynn – is set for Sunday, Nov.11.

The performance starts at 3 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way.

The ensemble pays tribute in music, words and visuals to Canadian veterans of the World Wars, the Middle East and the Balkans.

The concert features a traditional sunset ceremony, with songs of remembrance, patriotism and celebration of freedom, and will showcase special guest soloists vocalist Crystal Hicks, piper Jamie McGrath, and distinguished members of Canada’s military.

Then the ensemble will perform songs made famous by Vera Lynn, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Glenn Miller, and many others.

Tickets are $18 for adults; $13 for veterans, students and seniors; and $40 for a family.

Tickets are available at the door, online at Cascadia-veterans.eventbrite.ca, and at King’s Music in Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

Also available at those locations is a three- or four-concert pack for the 2018/19 season, which includes:

– Nov. 11 – Cascadia Remembers: Veterans and Vera Lynn;

– Dec. 23 – Cascadia’s Christmas Party Concert;

– March 10 – Luck o’ the Irish; and

– June 9 – Cascadia Goes Country.

The Cascadia Wind Ensemble was formed as a non-profit society in 2013 by Shannon Goldsmith to give adult and youth musicians an opportunity for performance of great concert band repertoire.

In the last year, Cascadia has presented formal concerts in Abbotsford and has performed in community events in Chilliwack, Mission, Hope, Abbotsford and Delta.

The ensemble was awarded a gold standing and trophy for Outstanding Community Band at the 2017 Kiwanis Fraser Valley International Music Festival.
