Cranbrook Community Theatre’s 2016 production of “Lucy”, by Canadian playwright Damien Atkins, will be returning to the stage on Saturday May 20, for “one night only” as part of the Theatre BC Mainstage Festival.
Directed by Trevor Lundy, “Lucy” tells the emotional story of a 13 year old girl with autism and her estranged mother, Vivian, who are brought back together when Lucy’s father asks Vivian to resume custody while he settles into his life with his new bride. Overwhelmed by the particulars of Lucy’s care and unable at first to connect with her daughter, Vivian soon realizes that she and Lucy are more alike than she ever could have expected – a revelation that has powerful and disturbing consequences.
The show features Kelsey Thompson as title character “Lucy”, a 13-year-old girl diagnosed with autism. The role intrigued Thompson as she was also diagnosed with autism when she was 4-years-old. The cast also features local actors, Tracy McGuire, Ashlee Perreault, Dean Nicholson and Michael Prestwich.
The performance on May 20 will be attended by a Theatre BC adjudicator who will watch this show, along with performances in Ladysmith and Duncan the following week, with one of the three being chosen to attend the Mainstage Festival taking place in July in Vernon.
“We are very proud of this production and extremely excited to be representing the Kootenays in this provincial competition,” says director Trevor Lundy. “But, more importantly, we are looking forward to receiving the feedback of the adjudicator. We hope the community will come out and support the show.”
The performance will be followed by a brief adjudication that the audience is encouraged to stick around and listen to. A reception will follow the adjudication in the Studio space for all in attendance. The cast and crew will then attend a detailed adjudication with the adjudicator the following morning. The public is welcome to attend this and coffee and treats will be provided. After he sees all THREE performances, the results will be announced.
“Lucy” by Damien Atkins runs Saturday, May 20, at 7:30pm. Tickets for this event are very limited and can be purchased at Lotus Books. Tickets are $18 ($15 for CCT Members and Patrons).
