The Fraser Valley Symphony presents its final concert of the season, titled “La Danse,” featuring cello soloist Roland Gjernes on Sunday, June 7.
Gjernes began studying the cello at the age of six. From 2004 to 2011 he served at principal cellist for the Semiahmoo Strings. In addition to winning several scholarships, he earned a gold medal for 10 consecutive years from the South Fraser Registered Music Teachers’ Festival in B.C. He spent the summer of 2011 performing and touring with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada as principal cellist and section member.
Gjernes is currently in his fourth year of his undergraduate degree. He was the recipient of the Piccolo Prix in the 2014 National Arts Center Bursary Competition. In 2014 he was invited to perform at the International Cello Festival of Canada and was honoured to perform alongside many great cellists. After receiving his Bachelor in Cello Performance, Roland hopes to complete his Masters degree in Europe.
Now in its 31st year, the Fraser Valley Symphony is the premier community orchestra of the region. Lindsay Mellor is conductor.
Concert is at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford, Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.
