CENTRE POINT: Events run the gamut this summer

School's out in the North Okanagan this week. Let the fun begin.

Ah, to have that wild anticipation of summer holidays that all those students are feeling in their classrooms this week. I miss those last few days before the big break – just to show up at school and have nothing pressing to focus on, no more deadlines or exams.

Riding out those last few hours was something I just didn’t appreciate enough as a child. I didn’t realize that growing up meant there’s always something that needs doing, whether you’re working or not.

With summer solstice now officially behind us, the busy events calendar at the Performing Arts Centre yields to make way for sunny days and outdoor activities. Sure, the building will see a short reprieve from audiences, but the centre’s worker-bees are busy getting ready for our exciting fall presentation season.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming brochure in August, and until then be sure to carve out some time for yourself and get out to these exciting events that are coming up in the next few weeks.

This week, the Hub Arts Collective holds a mirror up to suburban life with the Tony-award winning comedy God of Carnage.

What starts as a playground disagreement between children ends up with two sets of parents on opposite sides of a coffee table in an evening where civility and kindness gradually exit the scene as the parents themselves become increasingly childish.

The audience sits on all sides of the action in The Hub’s first theatre in-the-round-style seating layout.

God of Carnage plays Tuesday through Thursday at 7 p.m. Tuesday is two-for-one seating at the door.  Regular tickets for Wednesday and Thursday are on sale now through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

It’s only a few days to go until this year’s Funtastic Music Festival.

The music starts at the Department of National Defence grounds on Friday with headliner Honeymoon Suite (Wave Babies, New Girl Now). Saturday welcomes Sweet (Ballroom Blitz) and Sunday features Canadian country star Aaron Pritchett (Hold My Beer). Canada Day Monday features headliners Big Wreck and Theory of a Deadman playing through to the fireworks show after dark.

Tickets sell quickly for Funtastic, so call or go online to be a part of this long standing Vernon tradition.

Missoula Children’s Theatre (Hansel & Gretel, Snow White, Robinson Crusoe, Pinocchio) is back at the Performing Arts Centre next week for their production of Beauty Lou and the Country Beast.

The cast consists of up-and-coming local talent and their two performances are the culmination of a week-long musical theatre camp.

Watch the laughter, thrills and chills unfold in this original musical adaptation as performed by up to 60 local camp participants. The performances start at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday July 6 and there are still a few spots available for those interested in participating in the camp.

Call the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469) for your show tickets or to register for the camp.

Melina Moore returns to her vocal roots in A Night at the Opera on Saturday, July 6 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Joined by pianist Jim Leonard, Moore’s voice will make the legendary acoustics at All Saints Anglican Church resonate with the melodies of the best classical composers, from Donizetti to Verdi.

Tickets are on sale now through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).

Coming up July 14, be prepared to see and hear bagpipes in a whole new way as the six-time world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band takes the stage starting at 7 p.m.

These world class musicians will be playing selections from their most recent album Live from New York City. They will be in Vernon for one night only at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre. Call the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469) for your tickets.

Enjoy the shows!
